On the 18th March, Region 1 once again held its every growing STOMP Championships. Open to students aged 4-17yrs the event has always been a fantastic opportunity to introduce students into the world of competition in a local, fun and supportive environment. With over 140 students spanning 13 Regional clubs, we were all excited to see what the day had to offer. Ring allocations set, umpires seated, and student warmed up, we were ready to kick off…
Up first and competing across all three rings were our youngest students in the Generation-X divisions. Originally developed as a way of introducing the fundamentals of TKD to our most junior students, it is positive to see how far the Generation-X program has progressed, far exceeding all our expectations.
Following an excellent display of self-defence and traditional pattern work, the young contenders confidently moved on to sparring and power breaking. With busy and talented divisions across all grades there was certainly no easy route to the gold. On behalf of the umpire team and parents watching on, it was clear that all students who stepped on to the ring that morning, win/lose/draw, left as champions!!
Concluding the morning events were our junior Kup and black belts. With many of the competitors participating the following weekend at the UK ITF ‘Finals Day’ event, this was an ideal chance to polish their skills whilst shaking off any ring rust. Wowing the crowd with precise patterns and sharp sparring tactics it became clear very quickly the high-calibre of talent developing within the Region.
After a short lunch break it was time to continue the day with our cadet competitors. After an impressive oath recital from all present, students returned to the seating areas to await their divisions.
With an air of excitement buzzing throughout the arena, competitors were eager to step up on the mats and showcase the results of all their hard-work and dedication. Met by a cry of cheers from the audience, students performed patterns to the best of their ability taking each win or loss with humility. Patterns done it was then time to pad up and prepare for sparring.
With eager spectators and team members encouraging from the side lines everyone was excited to watch as the competitors stepped onto the ring. As with previous STOMP Championships strong performances were put in by all, with each student showing the heart and determination of a true Taekwon-Do practitioner.
We would like to thank all the umpires that worked tirelessly throughout the day as well as the administration team for co-ordinating the smooth running of the day. We would also like to extend our appreciation to all the competitors, parents and friends that supported the event and made the day a true success and pleasure to host.
